Keeping the Mayor honest.

Jeff Berkowitz: …is it your job in part to keep the Mayor honest and if so, is he a more honest guy now than he was a year and half ago?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: I think it is the job of the entire City Council to be good stewards of the public’s money…you saw a lot more questioning of our city’s departments…about waste, fraud and abuse within the City’s budgeting process but dare I say—there is still more to be done.

Who was Robert Sorich?

Jeff Berkowitz: What about Robert Sorich? You know Robert Sorich?

Ald. Sandi Jackson [Chicago, 7th ward]: I know of him.

Jeff Berkowitz: What was he doing, and are there people doing the same thing now, even as we speak?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: I know that that office has changed dramatically.

Jeff Berkowitz: What did Robert Sorich do?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: He was the Mayor’s official patronage person. He was responsible in the Mayor’s Intergovernmental Office for hiring and firing. And, apparently, this person had a scheme, some kind of chart made up, whereby people who fell within a certain ranking within that chart got city jobs. Some people who weren’t qualified to hold those city jobs got them anyway because of those connections.

Jeff Berkowitz: Political connections? Political rewards?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Political connections. Absolutely.

Jeff Berkowitz: Violations of the Shakman decree?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Absolutely.

Did Sorich take a fall for others? Did Mayor Daley know what Sorich was doing?

Jeff Berkowitz: Which you would know about, because you’re a lawyer.

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Yes, indeed. And I think any time there are those kinds of violations, those things have to be prosecuted and so Mr. Sorich is exactly where he should be.

Jeff Berkowitz: Was he the fall guy?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: No.

Jeff Berkowitz: Didn’t Mayor Daley know what his patronage chief [Sorich] was doing?

Ald. Sandi Jackson[7th ward]: You know what, that question has not yet been answered. Hopefully it will come to light sometime soon.

Will Mayor Daley be indicted?

Jeff Berkowitz: How would it come to light? Could the Mayor be indicted?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: I don’t know. I don’t know that answer.

Jeff Berkowitz: Could he?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: I know that investigations are still going on. I know that there should always be intense oversight. Any time you have an entity that spends the kind of money that the city of Chicago spends-

Jeff Berkowitz: What do they spend?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Upwards of thirty billion dollars a year.

Jeff Berkowitz: Thirty billion? What’s the budget?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Thirty billion.

Jeff Berkowitz: Does that include the six billion dollars for the Chicago Public Schools?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: It does to a certain degree-

Jeff Berkowitz: Or is that separate?

Ald. Sandi Jackson: Really, the state [city?] has fallen short, I have to say, on budgeting. On education issues.

Jeff Berkowitz: We’ll get to that. But the thirty billion includes six billion for the Chicago Public Schools?

Ald. Sandi Jackson[7th ward]: It includes the six billion for the Chicago city schools.
