Dan Proft [probable candidate in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary]: Right, the Sun-Times, an organization that defrauded its advertisers, an organization whose former CEO, Cyrus Freidheim, was an alleged war criminal, in his previous job. [watch show w/Proft].

Jeff Berkowitz: Alleged war criminal?

Dan Proft: No, no, no. You want to just give numbers… Here’s the problem. It is not a management problem. Everybody who is running for Governor or who is contemplating running for Governor thinks it is a management problem

Jeff Berkowitz: It’s a system problem…

Dan Proft: That’s right, it is a system problem.

Suntimes columnist and NBC-5 News/WTTW Chicago Tonight media personality Carol Marin has been throwing mud at Dan Proft, probable Republican Primary candidate for Governor, for a while now. Dan threw some mud back on May 24, 2009.

Yesterday, Marin threw some more mud at Proft:

In contrast, after Kirk, the Republicans have lesser-knowns like state Senators Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and Matt Murphy (R-Palatine). Not to mention a right-wing fringe player in former Cicero town spokesman Dan Proft, to appeal to the always-reliable Alan Keyes branch of the party.

Yes, Carol, Proft managed (with Bill Pascoe) Keyes’ Senate campaign in 2004, such as it was. Even Proft has referred to the fiasco as more like a Pentacostal revival than a campaign, due to the wackiness of Keyes as opposed to the direction of Pascoe and Proft. I mean Proft has also worked, as a consultant, to get, moderate Republican, pro-Choice State Rep. Beth Coulson (Glenview) re-elected. Does that make Proft pro-choice? I don’t think so.

And, while we’re questioning Carol Marin, if there are right-wing fringe players, there must be left-wing fringe players. When is the last time Carol Marin has written about a left-wing fringe player? Really, inquiring minds want to know. We’re waiting, Carol.

Tonight, Proft throws some mud back at Marin and her former boss. Watch Proft tonight at 8:30 pm on Cable Ch.21; or watch here; or read the below partial transcript of the show. Dan Proft [probable candidate in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary]: Right, the Sun-Times, an organization that defrauded its advertisers, an organization whose former CEO, Cyrus Freidheim, was an alleged war criminal, in his previous job.

Jeff Berkowitz: Alleged war criminal?

Dan Proft: Yeah. When he was CEO of Chiquita International brands, he was accused (as were other Chiquita executives) of paying basically bribe money to narco-terrorists in Columbia. This is a well reported story except in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Jeff Berkowitz: He was accused of that? Was anything shown?

Dan Proft: Yes, Chiquita International was fined millions of dollars. He never was prosecuted criminally, but civilly, they paid significant penalties. [See generally, here].

Jeff Berkowitz: All right, so there is certainly no conviction of him being a war criminal because …

Dan Proft: No, I said he was accused of being a war criminal and he and Chiquita International paid significant penalties. I bring this up—

Jeff Berkowitz: But, to make clear, you’re not saying [Freidheim] was found to be a war criminal, you’re saying he was accused of being a war criminal.

Dan Proft: Well, OJ Simpson was not found guilty, but he was ordered to pay, he lost the civil trial. I would say you can read into it yourself—if Chiquita International and Mr. Freidheim paid millions of dollars in civil penalties for what they were accused of doing-- that was in violation of international humanitarian law, you read between the lines.

Jeff Berkowitz: Okay, we’re not going to read between the lines, but …remember the initial comment…we were talking about Carol Marin

Dan Proft: …the problem with Illinois is systems…you have to fundamentally reform how we provide education, how we provide healthcare—

Jeff Berkowitz: We’ll get to education, just give me the number—

Dan Proft: No, no, no. You want to just give numbers… Here’s the problem. It is not a management problem. Everybody who is running for Governor or who is contemplating running for Governor thinks it is a management problem

Jeff Berkowitz: It’s a system problem…

Dan Proft: That’s right, it is a system problem.

Jeff Berkowitz: system is different from management? and how?

Dan Proft: …you have to look at how we provide these services and they need to be overhauled. You cannot make reforms at the margins and make the Chicago Public School system work, make our Medicaid program work—you can’t do it.

Dan Proft: The system is not broken, it’s "fixed."
