Better than FOX, MSNBC & CNN comments on Pres. Obama's speech tonight:Berkowitz w/Comptroller candidate Raja Krishnamoorthi; Cable and soon streaming
Jeff Berkowitz: …Are you agreeing with [State Comptroller] Hynes and [Gov.]Quinn that [we] should have a major increase in the income tax?
Raja Krishnamoorthi(D-Hoffman Estates), Candidate for State Comptroller, Democratic Primary: I think first of all before we can talk about anything like that we’ve got to talk about what are the meaningful reforms we are going to make in state government. We’ve got to cut wasteful spending. We’ve got to talk about how do we do business differently before taxpayers are going to be willing to potentially give more money but…
Jeff Berkowitz: …You’re going to have to either cut spending or raise taxes. That’s really kind of what you’re left with, right?

Jeff Berkowitz: …about Raja Krishnamoorthi, No. 1, he’s a nice guy…he might be too nice to succeed in this business…I have known him for a number of years…he emigrated to the U. S. with his parents when he was three months old from India…[graduated from] Princeton University, Harvard Law School (Honors), …Summa Cum Laude at Princeton… was an issues adviser for Barack Obama during his U. S. Senate Campaign…partner at Kirkland & Ellis…international law firm, Deputy State Treasurer [under Alexi Giannoulias]… people expect [the Comptroller] to be a taxpayer watchdog, know what the [state budget] deficit is—maybe you can’t do anything about it…what’s the deficit in Illinois? Is it three billion dollars? Is the State deficit ten billion dollars? Give us a number.
Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Hoffman Estates), Candidate for State Comptroller, Democratic Primary:..this coming year, they are projecting a deficit in excess of ten billion dollars on a roughly thirty billion dollar budget…what’s clear is that we are facing a fiscal calamity.
Jeff Berkowitz: But, for this current fiscal year, which we are already in?
Raja Krishnamoorthi: It’s about a four to five billion dollar [deficit].
Jeff Berkowitz: …So, at the end of this fiscal year, the state will be in the hole and they will have to borrow to make ends meet. Is that right?
Raja Krishnamoorthi: Correct. Just as they did this past year.
Jeff Berkowitz: …Are you agreeing with [State Comptroller] Hynes and [Gov.]Quinn that [we] should have a major increase in the income tax?
