Judith Ross on TV: Taking on Coulson

Judith-Rae Ross [D-Skokie, 17th Dist. Candidate]: It [the Michele Bromberg 17th Dist. 2004 campaign] was a poorly constructed negative campaign. And, that’s one thing. There is a difference. I’ve been in politics for forty years.

Berkowitz: Was it a race baiting campaign? Was that going on in Bromberg’s campaign? You know, things going out [as mailers]—

Judith-Rae Ross: Yeah, yeah, it could be said—

A discussion of the Bromberg Campaign style and some efforts to use then U. S. Senate Candidate and now U. S. Senator Barack Obama and his spouse, Michelle Obama, to give Michele Bromberg a boost in her uphill battle with State Rep. Coulson is here.

Getting support from prior candidates and State Reps:

Jeff Berkowitz: Would he [Michael Bender, who barely lost in the 2002 primary against Pat Hughes] support you?

Judith-Rae Ross: I don’t know, but I think so. Michele Bromberg [who lost in the general election to Beth Coulson in 2004]? The answer is yes.

Berkowitz: Michele is supporting you. [State Rep.] Lou Lang is supporting you?

Judith Ross: Lou Lang? We have to chat, but yes, we’re cordial.

Berkowitz: Is your campaign going to be different. Michele Bromberg got a lot of criticism. Some say that Speaker Mike Madigan ran that campaign. Others say it was a race baiting campaign. Was it a race baiting campaign?

Judith Ross: It was a poorly constructed negative campaign. And, that’s one thing. There is a difference. I’ve been in politics for forty years.

Berkowitz: Was it a race baiting campaign? Was that going on in Bromberg’s campaign? You know, things going out [as mailers]—

Judith Ross: Yeah, Yeah, it could be said—

Berkowitz: You’re not going to do any of that? [show concludes].

Iraq, Elections and Dissent:

Berkowitz: There were real elections in Iraq on January 30, 2005. You don’t deny that? We know that.

Judith Ross: I am not denying the elections.

Berkowitz: And those [elections] were a good thing, right?

Judith Ross: It was a good thing to have elections. What I am saying though is that democracy is based on two words: and the two words are--I disagree…

Berkowitz: Dissent.

Judith Ross: Dissent. And, that’s what underlies democracy.

Berkowitz: Yeah, but you can’t have a dissenter if you can’t have an election. There weren’t any elections ever in Iraq under Saddam Hussein, not real ones, right?

Judith Ross: Not real ones, no.

Handling unwanted pregnancies:

Judith Ross: …Maybe this is science fiction but what if an unwanted pregnancy could be transplanted. We have transplanted so many other things; maybe something like that would be possible and suitable adoptive parents found. That might be one way of doing it…
