Jeff Berkowitz: Potential Mayor Candidates: Jesse Jackson, Jr. Luis Gutierrez, Jesus Garcia, do you know Jesus—

Ald. Manuel Flores: I do.

Berkowitz: Danny Solis, John Fritchey, Dorothy Brown, Jim Houlihan- who you mentioned-- Forrest Claypool—

Ald. Flores: I think you have a very impressive--

Berkowitz: Meriam Santos, could she come back?

Ald. Flores: I don’t think she could come back.

Berkowitz: Manny Flores? Rahm Emanuel? Lisa Madigan? Pick one.

Ald. Flores: I think Rahm Emanuel and Lisa Madigan are outstanding. I think—

Berkowitz: John Fritchey?

Ald. Flores: John Fritchey has also done outstanding work as a legislator.

Berkowitz: Luis Gutierrez?

Ald. Flores: The Congressman has done incredible advocacy for the Hispanic Community and for all Chicagoans.

Berkowitz: Landmark Preservation. You were criticized [on that issue] in the Reader by Ben Jarovsky, right?

Ald. Flores: I don’t know if I was criticized.

Berkowitz: He raised the issue and he said you were gerrymandering [by saying], here’s one house and same [kind of] house across the street. One’s land marked for preservation, the other isn’t. He suggests something is going on there. What do you think?

Ald. Flores: Oftentimes, people don’t understand the process in terms of—

Berkowitz: You are not being unduly influenced by the developers?

Ald. Flores: No.

Berkowitz: You’re not allowing some developers to slide by. You think this is good landmark preservation? The East Village area is going to be protected?

Ald. Flores: The East Village area has seen the demolition of 25% in the last five years, Jeff. What we are doing is we are telling people—Hey, you have to draw the line at some point and really come up with a planned development perspective. We support development but we support it in a way that is going to be reasonable and in a way that is going to have an over-all positive impact on communities. The East Village is one of the most—is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the City of Chicago—it needs development planning.

Jeff Berkowitz: Let me ask you about something else. Corruption Tax, City of Chicago. Are people [in Chicago] paying a 20% corruption tax. Could you cut out the corruption and divert that corruption money to further education?

Ald. Manuel Flores: I think whenever you are dealing with inefficiencies and that would include corruption—

Berkowitz: You stand up to the Mayor on that? Would you stand up to the Mayor and tell him there is too much corruption in Chicago?

Ald. Flores: I think what we need to do is work together and say, Where are the inefficiencies—[show ends].
