Not “feeling the love” for Oberweis-- O'Malley to Run for Guv?

Jeff Berkowitz: But, would you possibly support Jim Oberweis?

Pat O’Malley: I would doubt that I would.
********************************************
This week’s suburban edition of “Public Affairs,” features Pat O’Malley, who entered the State Senate in 1992 as a member of the “Fab 5”, a group that also included State Senators Peter Fitzgerald, Steve Rauschenberger, Dave Syverson and Chris Lauzen.

Pat O'Malley served in the Illinois State Senate for 10 years, giving up his senate seat to run in the 2002 Republican Primary and he is thinking of running again in the March, 2006 Republican Gubernatorial Primary. O'Malley said that he will announce his decision around the end of the state legislative session.

See the end of this blog entry for a summary of the topics covered in this week’s show and a detailed suburban airing schedule.

This show will also air throughout the City of Chicago [in the regular “Public Affairs,” City of Chicago time slot] on next Monday night, April 11 at 8:30 pm on Cable Ch. 21 [CANTV].

A partial transcript of the show with former State Senator O’Malley is included, below and it will be supplemented on this blog over the course of the coming week.

Former State Senator Pat O’Malley: …Joe [Birkett] is a person of substance. He is good people.

Jeff Berkowitz: What about Jim Oberweis? Is he good people?

O’Malley: I don’t really know Jim very well.

Berkowitz: Jim has talked to you. He has been on the show. He [Oberweis] said he talked to you and asked for your support. And, [he] said you are thinking about that-- you are thinking about running--you could support somebody else.

O’Malley: I never said that to Jim Oberweis.

Berkowitz: You never said what?

O’Malley: I never said that I was thinking of supporting him. Is that what he said?

Berkowitz: Well, he said that’s a possibility, yeah.

O’Malley: I never ever said that to him, so if he said-- I wasn’t here to hear his words, but if that’s what he said—

Berkowitz: Well, we’ll have to go back and run the tape but I think he certainly implied that was a possibility.

O’Malley: I can’t imagine that he would try to mislead anybody—

Berkowitz: Because you’re saying there is no way you’d support Jim Oberweis?

O’Malley: I never ever said that I was thinking about or that I would support Jim Oberweis.

Berkowitz: But, would you possibly support Jim Oberweis?

O’Malley: I would doubt that I would.

Berkowitz: How come?

O’Malley: I’ll leave that between myself and Jim.

Berkowitz: All right. What about [State Senator and possible gubernatorial candidate] Steve Rauschenberger? You’d support …Steve, possibly?

O’Malley: No, the reality is the likelihood of me running is more important than that.

Berkowitz: Okay

O’Malley: Jim is Jim, Joe is Joe; Let me say that Steve is a good friend of mine. Steve was a supporter of mine in the 2002 campaign [Gubernatorial Republican Primary].

Berkowitz: And you were a supporter of his for the U. S. Senate [in 2004 Republican Primary].

O’Malley: Yes, I was.

Berkowitz: You made-- A lot of automated calls [for Senator Rauschenberger] went out with your name, right?

O’Malley: They sure did.
