Carlos Hernandez-Gomez: …What the Illinois GOP needs is—they need a pit bull who can go up against the Democrats , two, they need someone who is not running for office in 2006 or 2008 and three, probably most importantly, someone who can raise money.

Steve Edwards: How does Andy McKenna do on that scorecard? According to you, Jeff Berkowitz?

Jeff Berkowitz: Well, he has the contacts, he has the relationships. His father [Andy McKenna, Sr.] has a lot of relationships. Andy donated about 2 million dollars of his own to his Senate Campaign, and he raised another 2.5 million. So, on that score he is good. The troublesome area to some is that he is not a pit bull by any means. He is not very forceful. He is not very outgoing. He is not somebody who can go to the press and raise the issues and talk about Daley Corruption, about Chicago trying to get a casino that would be patronage filled and so forth, and controlled by the Mayor. That is what Steve McGlynn is saying. And that is Andy’s main competition for the position.

Berkowitz: …Joe Morris mentioned this in an Illinois Leader column just last evening-- that the emerging leadership of the moderates [the new Republican Establishment] is actually [Cong.] Ray Lahood, Cong. Mark Kirk and minority leader, in the statehouse, Tom Cross. … He [LaHood] is going to unite the [conservative] opposition. The conservatives are going to say, as Morris suggested, they need to unite around a Central candidate—that will be Steve Rauschenberger and you are looking at a Senator Rauschenberger- Ray Lahood matchup in the Republican party primary.

Christine Dudley: Oh, I think there is going to be more than that...

Edwards: What about Pat O’Malley?

Berkowitz: Pat, I think will defer in the end to Rauschenberger, And, I think Oberweis will defer to Rauschenberger. And, I think Gidwitz, Schillerstrom and Judy Baar Topinka will defer to Ray LaHood. And, you are going to see a one on one race that will be quite interesting.

Dudley: I totally disagree with Jeff on this and I think all of those folks will get in[to the Governor’s race]...
**********************************
Carlos Hernandez-Gomez: One other question: is Judy going to pull the trigger. She would definitely be a factor in the primary. And, do her and Gidwitz both get in…and the question is, will O’Malley stay out of it….
***********************************
Dudley: …all these people are expressing interest in running against this Governor, which again comes back to my point- This Governor can be beat…

Berkowitz: I will say it flat out. Judy Baar Topinka will not run [for Governor]… she is over, she is looking for a job in Washington, DC...

Dudley: She is not, Jeff. I don’t know where you get your information. She doesn’t even like Washington, DC. I’ve been there with her.

Berkowitz: I talk to people just like you do.

Dudley: I talk to Judy [Baar Topinka].

Berkowitz: I don’t have any bias, at all. I am fair and balanced.

Steve Edwards: I will let that be the last word….
