Jeff Berkowitz: Education, you support school choice, school vouchers?

Cong. Dan Lipinski: Yes, I do.

Berkowitz: Your father did, right?

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: I found somebody. You know we spend about $10,000 in the City of Chicago-public schools, per kid, per year. We take the $10,000 and put it in the backpack, here…and we give this to the 435, 000 parents of the 435,000 kids in the Chicago Public Schools. You would take those backpacks and gladly give them [to the parents]? I know it is more of a state and local policy but the Feds can have an influence [on education]. You would like to see that kind of a policy so the parents can exercise some choice. Strap this backpack on the kid. If the kid goes to a public school, nothing changes. If a kid goes to a private school, like yours, St. Ignatious, out goes the kid, out goes the money and—you would do that, right?

Lipinski: I don’t want this to be an excuse to cut funding for the public schools. I don’t want this to be an excuse to sort of, you know, go ahead and sort of knock them down—

Berkowitz: But, you would give people that school choice?

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: And, you would support charter schools, as well?

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: Guns. You support the ban on assault weapons?

Lipinski: I certainly do.

Berkowitz: So, on that, you are a little less conservative, would you say.?

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: Do you believe in the Second Amendment?

Lipinski: Do I believe the Second Anendment exists?

Berkowitz: Well, no. You know, people call them, in the state of Illinois, call them 2A folks. They are strong supporters of the 2nd Amendment, you know that.

Lipinski: Yeah.

Berkowitz: Are you a 2A. guy?

Lipinski: No.

Berkowitz: You are a gun control guy?

Lipinski: I think it is very clear that we need to do more to control gun violence.

Berkowitz: So, in general, you support gun control?

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: Do you support a ban on assault weapons.

Lipinski: Yes.

Berkowitz: You would have liked it if it [the assault weapon ban] had been raised and passed before the Congress? Instead, it expired this year—the 10 year ban we initiated in 1994.

Lipinski: We should have gone ahead and continued it and made it stronger?
