O'Brien and Brown

Terry O’Brien [Candidate for Cook County Board President]: She has also said she’s going to gradually phase it out [the Stroger increase in the County sales tax], rather than phase it out immediately, so, I mean, I don’t know what they’re seeing and then—
O'Brien and Danny Davis
Jeff Berkowitz: Cong. Danny Davis, see any daylight—he’s African-American; Dorothy Brown’s African-American. The dispute between you and Brown, not based on race, right?
Terry O’Brien: No.
Jeff Berkowitz: What about Cong. Danny Davis [D-Chicago, 7th CD]? Any daylight between him and you on taxes?
Terry O’Brien: Danny’s mentioned he hasn’t had enough information to make a decision on what he wants to do—
Jeff Berkowitz: So, he’s not even saying he’ll definitely—
Terry O’Brien: Repeal it or—
Jeff Berkowitz: I’ve heard him say on a radio show that I did on WVON that he couldn’t answer that question when I said, what if you were there, would you have supported that increase in the tax? He said because so many other things would have been different-- he couldn’t answer that.

Not a racial issue
Jeff Berkowitz: It’s not a racial issue between you and Danny Davis.
Terry O’Brien: No. Danny and I have worked together on bringing revenue to the District. From the federal level.
Jeff Berkowitz: To which District?
Terry O’Brien: To the Metropolitan Reclamation Water District. We’re constructing this tunnel and…

Fracturing the empowerment of the African-American Community
Jeff Berkowitz: And yet…Cong. Davis ...lectured me that he wouldn’t do anything that’s going to cause a fracturing… of the empowerment of the African-American community because he would point out that there are four African-American candidates running for Cook County Board President [in the Democratic Primary] and there’s only one candidate who’s white, so although you’ve said no racial issues, you would admit there’s a lot of ethnic identity that goes on in any case, whether it’s race, religion or so forth, right?
Terry O’Brien: I wouldn’t.
Jeff Berkowitz: You’re Irish?
Terry O’Brien: I’m Irish, yeah.
Jeff Berkowitz: Irish Catholic?
Terry O’Brien: Irish Catholic.
Jeff Berkowitz: Not to pick on Irish Catholic but…I hear the best name on a ballot in general in Cook County is what? An Irish name, right. Especially for judges. I think there have been people who have been Jewish—who have changed their name-- just to have that Irish name on the ballot, running for judge.
Terry O’Brien: I know one.
