Better than Olbermann w/Rove: Berkowitz w/ Rep. Beaubien on Gov. Quinn's tax increase, pols demonizing business and much more; Cable and Streaming

State Rep. Beaubien [R-Wauconda]: ...I think Blagojevich was going in the wrong direction over the years; attacking business, and making this a state where you don't want to do business is a mistake. Blagojevich demonized business for six years, constantly beat them up, saying they're not paying their fair share. I have a feeling this governor's going to come along and say, let's raise [the corporate income tax]...let’s say two and a half percent...[Watch Rep. Beaubien here].

Jeff Berkowitz: So it drives businesses out of Illinois?
*******************************************************
State Rep. Beaubien [R-Wauconda]: If they [Illinois] put themselves in the position of being the highest corporate tax state in the country—they may be second or third...which is already, by the way, rated consistently in internet groups... near the bottom...you add this to it and we'll be dead bottom. And these corporations, they look to move, they look at these [rating] sites...
******************************
Jeff Berkowitz: ...would you disclose your income other than--

State Rep. Beaubien: I don’t think it’s anyone's business. People know that I have a great deal of money, that's not a big secret.

Blago and Quinn: Demonizing corporations?

Jeff Berkowitz: Is the current corporate income tax 4.8% ? …If you raise that 1 %, you get how much [additional tax revenue]?

State Rep. Beaubien [R-Wauconda]: I don’t know because I don’t know those numbers. Here is the concern I have about corporations, and here is where I think they're going in the wrong direction. I think Blagojevich was going in the wrong direction over the years, attacking business, and making this a state where you don't want to do business is a mistake. Blagojevich demonized business for six years, constantly beat them up, saying they're not paying their fair share. I have a feeling this governor's going to come along and say, let's raise it--I don't know—let’s say two and a half percent. I don't know what the number is.

Jeff Berkowitz: So it drives businesses out of Illinois?

Illinois, High real estate taxes? One of the highest corporate tax rates in the country?

State Rep. Beaubien: It would be the highest corporate tax state in the country. You think that's going to encourage people to expand their businesses? To come into the state of Illinois?

Jeff Berkowitz: When you do that, you have fewer businesses, you get less revenue, then you come back and say you have to raise the corporate tax even more…

State Rep. Beaubien [R-Wauconda]: If they [Illinois] put themselves in the position of being the highest corporate tax state in the country—they may be second or third, I don't know--which is already, by the way, rated consistently in internet groups, we're rated near the bottom anyway--you add this to it and we'll be dead bottom. And these corporations, they look to move, they look at these sites. And, they’ll say, the highest tax-- Our real estate taxes are huge-- and there's really nothing in this program to help reduce the real estate taxes.

[Ed Note: "Illinois would have the fourth highest state corporate income tax rate in the nation under Gov. Quinn's plan," says Tax Foundation Staff Economist Josh Barro."Corporate tax burdens are ultimately borne by individuals, as businesses pass these costs onto their employees, customers and shareholders. This plan would raise the cost of doing business and creating jobs in Illinois." [See here]

Pledge on Sales tax but not on corporate income tax?

Jeff Berkowitz: Now you've said you want to look for other ways [to deal the state budget deficit], other than raising taxes, but you wouldn't take a pledge that says you won't under any circumstances vote for an increase in the income tax or the sales tax, right? You wouldn’t take that pledge?

State Rep. Beaubien: I'll take the pledge I won’t do a sales tax.

Jeff Berkowitz: You would not raise the sales tax.

Open budgeteer Beaubien?

State Rep. Beaubien: But as a budgeteer, I've got to remain open, and I think the minute you do that, you walk into the room and they say Beaubien is against everything. I want to see everything on the table, look at the whole process. Am I against tax increases? Yes.

Disclosure of family income or net worth?

Jeff Berkowitz: Do people want to look at legislators and say, what's your income, are you affected by this? Last week we asked Senator Garrett [read and watch here] that, what was her family income? She gave us information on that. If people ask you that question, what's your family income, are you willing to answer that?

State Rep. Beaubien: No.

Jeff Berkowitz: How come? Don't you think that people are entitled to know as your constituents, for ethical reasons, what your income is going in [to your political office]—family income and family net worth-- and what it is coming out [of your political office]?

Invading Rep. Beaubien’s privacy?

State Rep. Beaubien [R-Wauconda]: I think that's a complete invasion of privacy. If my wife--my wife works, she works all the time, she's a volunteer.

Jeff Berkowitz: She does work.

State Rep. Beaubien: She's volunteers. She's not paid.

Jeff Berkowitz: She's not paid.

State Rep. Beaubien: If she were, she'd be making a lot of money.

Jeff Berkowitz: So, it would just be your income then?

State Rep. Beaubien: It’s just my income.

Jeff Berkowitz: So why shouldn't they know? You're the State Rep.

State Rep. Beaubien: Actually, she has half my assets.

Beaubien’s income: it’s none of your business?

Jeff Berkowitz: So you're saying you're willing to disclose your income other than--would you disclose your income other than--

State Rep. Beaubien: I don’t think it’s anyone's business. People know that I have a great deal of money, that's not a big secret.
