Time for John Kass to put up or shut up on Obama: Fired up, John? Ready to go?

Again, is John Kass saying the Daleys played a significant role in getting Barack Obama to where he is today? If not, what’s the big deal of Kass arguing that Democrat Daley supported Democrat Obama here and there? If yes, where is the evidence to support that?

Come on John, please come on "Public Affairs." But, it won’t be softballs—like the ones you get on the Journal Editorial Report, Fox Chicago Sunday or Chicago Tonight. Time to play Hardball with Berkowitz. Fired up, John? Ready to Go?

For at least a year, the Chicago Tribune’s John Kass has been arguing that Senator Obama is “backed,” by the Daley machine. [See here]. Well, if Kass is arguing that Mayor Daley has supported Obama for President and that Daley supported Obama in his general election campaign for the U. S. Senate- he’s right on that, but so what? Was Mayor Daley instrumental in Obama beating Alan Keyes or in his winning the Democratic nomination for President? Of course not. So what is Kass’ point?

Kass has implied [if not said outright] that he thinks Obama is a product of the Daley Machine. [See here]. But, Kass does nothing to tie Daley to Obama’s election to the State Senate in 1995-96, to any of Obama's re-elections to the State Senate or to any of Obama’s actions in the State Senate (Kass’ arm waving about state senators often being controlled by others is just that, a bunch of arm waving with no evidence to support the specifics of Kass’ arguments about Obama)

Similarly, Kass has nothing relevant to say about Obama’s election to the U. S. Senate in 2004, when Daley was officially and unofficially neutral in the Senate Democratic Primary (And Daley’s brother, John, was supporting the machine candidate, Comptroller Dan Hynes, in that race).

Kass does tie Obama to Tony Rezko in 2005 (when Obama engaged in a simultaneous purchase of a house (by Obama) and a side lot (by Rezko’s wife)). Yes, a boneheaded move, but hardly an indication of a tie of Obama to the Daley machine, unless Kass is going to argue that Rezko (convicted of 16 felony white collar corruption counts yesterday in a federal courtroom in Chicago) has been Daley’s lackey since 1991 when Rezko, along with many others, offered Obama, coming out of Harvard Law School, a job (which Obama turned down).

Obama acknowledges his decision to involve Rezko in that house transaction was a "boneheaded move,” as Rezko, by 2005, was known to be under federal investigation. Obama has also acknowledged discussing campaign strategy and other matters on a daily basis, at times, with Rezko during the 2004 U. S. Senate Democratic Primary campaign, which is before Rezko was generally known to be under investigation by the Feds. Further, Obama has [belatedly] acknowledged receiving about a quarter of a million dollars from or through the fundraising efforts of Rezko over the years, from 1996 to 2004, with most and perhaps all of that occurring before anyone knew Rezko was under investigation.

In short, none of the above demonstrates that Obama was the product of the Daley machine or that Daley has ever done any “significant backing of Obama.” As Cook County Comm. and Obama media team member Forrest Claypool(D-Chicago) has argued to me recently regarding Senator Obama’s and Senator Durbin’s letter supporting Todd Stroger in the 2006 general election for Cook County Board President, it isn’t too shocking when leading Democrats support or back other Democrats. [Watch here].

And, yesterday, Kass wrote, “That'll all change, won't it? once Chicago Democrats install one of their own at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.” [See here]. Again, Kass is saying Obama is a “Chicago Democrat.” Yes, Obama is a Democrat who has lived for most of the last quarter century in Chicago or more precisely, in Hyde Park. You could just as well call Obama a Hyde Park Democrat. Indeed, his critics who want to paint him as an elitist call Obama a “Columbia, Harvard, Hyde Park Democrat.” Perhaps, but hardly the sign of a Chicago Democrat. Obama’s critics can’t have it both ways.

Have any of the above arguments of Kass demonstrated that Obama reports to Mayor Daley? Obama was created by Mayor Daley? Obama owes much of anything to Mayor Daley? Doesn’t seem so.

And, today, Kass writes, “As most adults know but pretend otherwise, Obama is backed by the Daleys of Chicago, yet he's run a personality-cult campaign tied to the idea that he's the archangel of political reform.” [See here]. Again, is Kass saying the Daleys played a significant role in getting Obama to where he is? If not, what’s the big deal of Kass arguing that Democrat Daley supported Democrat Obama here and there? If yes, where is the evidence to support that?

Time for Kass to put up or shut up. This reporter, being fairandbalanced has challenged Kass on this blog to support his argument, but has also taken Kass’ argument and used it to challenge various Democrat Obama supporters, e.g., Comm. Forrest Claypool [Watch here and Read here], on this reporter’s TV show.

But now its time for Kass to support and defend his arguments. John, appear on “Public Affairs,” and answer some questions. Obama appeared on our show five separate times from 2001 to 2004 and answered all the questions we had for him. Kass, on the other hand, has declined to appear five times, or so.

As this reporter and show host said, it is time for Kass to put up or shut up. Come on John, please come on "Public Affairs." But, it won’t be softballs—like the ones you get on the Journal Editorial Report, Fox Chicago Sunday or Chicago Tonight. Time to play Hardball with Berkowitz. Fired up, John? Ready to Go?
