Jeff Berkowitz: I think what people want to know about Barack Obama—one thing people want to know-- is [Chicago Tribune columnist] John Kass right? He says that Barack Obama is a product of the Daley machine. I fought with John Kass a little about that on my blog…what do you say to John Kass when he says-- Barack Obama is a product of the Daley machine.

Forrest Claypool [Cook County Commissioner (D-Chicago) and Obama media team member]: Well, I didn’t see him say that. And, if he said that, I certainly don’t think that is anywhere close to correct. I mean, Barack Obama...

This week’s Chicago metro suburban edition of “Public Affairs,” features Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool, who is also an Obama media team member. The show was taped on May 25, 2008.

Comm. Forrest Claypool defends Obama as a reformer and as not being a product of the Daley machine, notwithstanding Obama’s failure to endorse Claypool for County Board president, Obama’s fall, 2006 letter supporting Todd Stroger; and Obama’s close affiliation over the years with Tony Rezko, now awaiting a verdict on extortion and other federal corruption charges; Claypool also defends Cook County Commissioners Quigley and Suffredin, labelled by many as “reform dropouts.”

Comm. Forrest Claypool debates and discusses, with Jeff Berkowitz, Public Affairs show host and Executive Legal Recruiter a variety of other issues relating to Presidential candidates Obama and McCain; Also discussed is Cook County Politics, whether President Todd Stroger has defeated the Gang of four and reform and much, much more.

Claypool, as a member of the Obama for President media team and friend and political ally of Obama is uniquely qualified, in many respects, to discuss Barack Obama, the man and the Presidential candidate. The show focuses on the Obama Presidential Campaign, but implicitly and explicitly touches on Cook County Politics, Reform and Public Policy.

You can watch the show with Comm. Claypool here.

Next week's "Public Affairs," show in the Chicago Metro Suburbs features State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago), who coincidentally succeeded Barack Obama as the State Senator from Illinois' 13th legislative District when Obama was elected to the U. S. Senate in November, 2004.

A partial transcipt of the show with Comm. Claypool is included, directly, below:

Jeff Berkowitz: I think what people want to know about Barack Obama—one thing people want to know is [Chicago Tribune columnist] John Kass right? He says that Barack Obama is a product of the Daley machine. I fought with John Kass a little about that on my blog…what do you say to John Kass when he says Barack Obama is a product of the Daley machine.

Forrest Claypool [Cook County Commissioner (D-Chicago) and Obama media team member]: Well, I didn’t see him say that. And, if he said that, I certainly don’t think that is anywhere close to correct. I mean, Barack Obama ran as an independent from Hyde Park and obviously Hyde Park, as anyone who files Chicago politics knows, has never been part of the Democratic machine. Independence there is a pre-requisite for the candidates to be elected. And, he ran as someone outside the machine and won and, in fact, in the [U. S.] Senate Primary Mayor Daley was not in Barack Obama’s corner-- in that Senate Primary.

Jeff Berkowitz: Was Mayor Daley neutral in that [Primary]?

Comm. Forrest Claypool: He was officially neutral. Obviously, everyone knows he has strong family ties to the Hynes family, and Dan Hynes [State Comptroller and son of former Cook County Assessor Tom Hynes] was one of the candidates.

Jeff Berkowitz: John Daley was supporting Hynes—[Cook County Commissioner and Finance Committee Chairman John Daley is Mayor] Daley’s brother.

Comm. Forrest Claypool: I believe-- although we would have to look at that. And so… the notion that Mayor Daley had anything to do with Barack Obama’s rise, I think, is belied by the facts and by the history.

Jeff Berkowitz: Well, you know, yes and no. Because …when they think of Forrest Claypool, they think of reform and you’ve got to be proud about that, right?

Comm. Forrest Claypool: Sure.

Jeff Berkowitz: You were the reformer.

Comm. Forrest Claypool: Sure.

Jeff Berkowitz: And, you were running in the Democratic Primary for Cook County Board President in March, 2006; you were running against John Stroger… a nice guy…now deceased [we won’t] say anything negative in that sense, but nobody was going to mistake John Stroger for a reformer, right?

Comm. Forrest Claypool: Yes, he had a lot of positive qualities, obviously, and he was a good man but we had a fundamental disagreement about the nature of government

Jeff Berkowitz: Yeah, that was the difference, you were reform and [John Stroger] wasn’t. And, Barack Obama could have been extremely influential in that decision that people were making whether to support Forrest Claypool or John Stroger. [But, Obama] stayed out of that. He sat on the fence [Go here to continue reading this partial transcript of this week’ show with Claypool].

Claypool, a University of Illinois Law School grad, was Chief of Staff for Mayor Daley from 1989-91 and 1998-99. He is in his second term as a Cook County Board Member and lost a close Democratic Primary race for Cook County Board President in 2006 to then three-term incumbent President (and now deceased) John Stroger.

Topics discussed on this episode of “Public Affairs,” include whether Chicago Tribune columnist is right when he asserts that Barack Obama is a product of the Daley machine, whether Senator Obama and Cong. Jesse Jackson, Jr. were not true to reform when they both declined to endorse in the Claypool-John Stroger 2006 race, whether race played a major role in Senator Obama’s decision, whether Senator Obama was not true to reform when he joined Senator Durbin in a full-throated endorsement letter supporting Todd Stroger for County Board President; whether Obama’s close relationship with Tony Rezko over the years is defensible, whether identifiable traits explain why Obama, after only three years of elected national office, has become the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the U. S

Also discussed is whether Senator Obama has been as independent of his Party as Senator McCain has been of his; whether Senator Obama’s No. 1 liberal U. S. Senator rating by the National Journal is consistent with Obama’s post-partisan image; whether Obama’s support of the subsidy-laden farm bill for agri-business and wealthy farmers and McCain’s opposition to it says something about which candidate is the true reformer; whether Obama’s problem in attracting low income white voters, especially in Appalachia, is a national election weakness; how much of Obama’s Pastor Wright problem will dog him through-out the national election; how did President Todd Stroger overcome the Gang of Nine to get his 15%, plus, tax increase through the Cook County Board; Is Reform dead in Cook County now that Commissioners Quigley and Suffredin have become “reform drop-outs,” leaving the reform effort undermanned, with the Gang of four reduced to the Gang of two: Forrest Claypool (D) and Tony Peraica (R)
