Watch Oberweis Here: You know in your Heart he's Right?

Berkowitz: So, you are looking at spending a million dollars [in last three weeks of campaign?]. Do you think that is enough to turn the trick here?

Jim Oberweis [Republican Primary Candidate for Governor]: It will be more than that.

Berkowitz: Two million?

"Public Affairs," is featuring Jim Oberweis, Republican Primary Gubernatorial Candidate, this coming week in 35 Chicago Metro suburbs on Comcast Cable; A week from Monday night through-out the City of Chicago; And, on your computer, right now.

Oberweis, who puts his net worth at between 10 and 50 million dollars, is one of four major candidates in the Republican Primary. He is one of two social conservatives in the field [the other is Sen. Brady], and is generally pegged as currently in second place behind social moderate and establishment-status quo candidate Judy Baar Topinka and ahead of Ron Gidwitz, who is viewed as a social moderate who has bolted from the establishment-status quo wing of the Republican Party. State Sen. and social conservative Bill Brady, the only downstater [Bloomington] in the race, has stayed in it despite his inability to catch fire, fueling speculation he was placed there to play spoiler and drain votes from Oberweis in case Oberweis gets close to Topinka.

In 25 North Shore, North and Northwest suburbs, the show is on this coming Tuesday in its regular Tuesday night time slot: 8:30 pm on Comcast Cable Ch. 19 or 35, as indicated, below.

Jim Oberweis [R-Sugar Grove, Gubernatorial Candidate]: To put Judy Baar Topinka and ethics in the same sentence is really an oxymoron:

Jeff Berkowitz: Tell me this. Why is she the front-runner? …She was at 38% and you are at 17%. If it is as you say, why the 21-point spread that goes her way?

Oberweis: She [Topinka] has the best-known name. She is the one Republican who has been elected statewide…

Berkowitz: But, again, what’s going to change. 23 days. You have spent a lot of money. Certainly, you are well known…If it is name recognition, shouldn’t you have it?

Oberweis: In fact, we are going to be spending the next 23 days getting the message out as to what her positions on the issues are versus what my positions on the issues are and we haven’t begun to do that yet, but that’s coming this week.

Berkowitz: So, would you say over the next three weeks, you might be spending two or three million dollars in ads?

Oberweis: I will say that we will probably spend more in the last three weeks of the campaign than we have in the first year of the campaign.

Berkowitz: Which would be-- how much have you spent in the first year?

Oberweis: oh, in excess of a million dollars.

Berkowitz: So, you are looking at spending a million dollars [in last three weeks of campaign?]. Do you think that is enough to turn the trick here?

Oberweis: It will be more than that.

Berkowitz: Two million?

Oberweis: It will be enough to get the message out.

Berkowitz: Mostly it is TV ads?

Oberweis: TV ads and direct mail.

Berkowitz: Is it specific? Is it getting at this reform issue and why you are a reformer and—

Oberweis: Absolutely.

Berkowitz: Is it called negative advertising?

Oberweis: No, it is really just demonstrating her [Topinka’s] positions on issues and talking about where she stands so that voters can make an intelligent choice. Right now, voters aren’t able to make an intelligent choice. She has been running from the issues. She won’t talk about the issues. She’s trying to avoid any types of true debates where we can really challenge and talk about issues…

Berkowitz: So, you think through ads, mailers, TV, you can get the issues across between you and Judy Baar Topinka?

Oberweis: That’s our belief. That’s our sincere hope. We’ll find out over the next three weeks.
