Better than Rachel Maddow w/ Cong. Mark Kirk: Berkowitz w/ Julie Hamos, IL 10th CD Democratic Primary Candidate and State Rep.; Cable and Streaming

Jeff Berkowitz: …your rival [in the Democratic Primary], Dan Seals, was asked that question [essentially] in 2005…by Lee Goodman [the 2004 Democratic Nominee in the 10th CD race]… and the answer Seals gave was he’d come down “on the side of peace.” Is that a good answer? Do you differ with Seals?

Julie Hamos, 10th CD Dem. Primary Candidate and State Rep.: Well, ultimately, I think we need to get to peace, but I am standing on the side of Israel when they are facing a very formidable foe in Iran-- and Iran right now is the No. 1 issue that I think Israelis are thinking about… [Watch show with 10th CD Dem. Primary Candidate Hamos]

Rep. Julie Hamos: I think what I have been supporting—when we talk about gun control, we talk about sensible, reasonable gun regulation—not going into people’s homes and taking the gun away from them.

Jeff Berkowitz: …When you were going to run statewide, you had to reassure people if you were running for Attorney General, you weren’t interested in taking guns away from people downstate.

Rep. Julie Hamos: I suspect I would have supported that—

Jeff Berkowitz: Supported the [Economic] stimulus.

Jeff Berkowitz: So, you are open to other options to the public option [for healthcare insurance reform]?

Choosing sides between Israel and Iran.

Jeff Berkowitz: …Julie Hamos, if you were in the Congress and you were asked to vote on that, you were asked to give guidance to the President—where should he “come down on this conflict between Israel and Iran,” what’s your answer…

Julie Hamos, 10th CD Dem. Primary Candidate and State Rep.: I think it’s a very unusual…question because…Israel is a beacon of Democracy in the Middle-East, so of course I would support the democratic country in that region-

Jeff Berkowitz: Of course you would support Israel?

State Rep. Julie Hamos: Of course I would support Israel. But, it is hard to think through a hypothetical like that because I think if there really was a conflict with Iran, I think the rest of the world would be engaged and it wouldn’t just impact Israel, that’s what I’m saying.

Rep. Julie Hamos: Well, ultimately, I think we need to get to peace, but I am standing on the side of Israel when they are facing a very formidable foe in Iran-- and Iran right now is the No. 1 issue that I think Israelis are thinking about…

The 2nd Amendment and the right to own guns

Jeff Berkowitz: Do you believe in the 2nd Amendment? Do people have a right to own guns?

Julie Hamos, 10th CD Dem. Primary Candidate and State Rep.: I think that the United States Supreme Court has told us that they do.

Jeff Berkowitz: And you back that up?

Rep. Julie Hamos: I think that’s what our Constitution says and I back up the United States Supreme Court.

Jeff Berkowitz: When you were running for—

Rep. Julie Hamos: No, because I think the other thing is that the United States Supreme Court has spoken and I think that [the Heller Supreme Court decision] is probably just the first of what probably will be many cases that establish what that right is really about.

The 787 billion dollar economic stimulus plan

Jeff Berkowitz: … Unemployment has gone higher than President Obama said it [would]—

State Rep. Julie Hamos [D-Evanston]: Unemployment is still a concern, obviously. Would I have supported the [787 billion dollar economic] stimulus package? I guess again I want to see what was fully laid out at that time- what I am worried about—

Jeff Berkowitz: What would you have done? Yes or no, and then you can explain.

Rep. Julie Hamos: I suspect I would have supported that—

Jeff Berkowitz: Supported the [economic] stimulus—

Rep. Julie Hamos: But, I am very aware of [the importance of] that money being spent wisely. And, at the state level, for example, I just made a phone call—I work on energy efficiency. That stimulus plan was giving a lot of energy efficiency money, over 100 million dollars—I am staying on top of our energy efficiency people in Springfield to make sure we have a plan for putting forward that’s reasonable, that’s wise…at the state level, now we have to make sure that that much money is being spent wisely.

The Public Option: essential to healthcare insurance reform?

Jeff Berkowitz: So, you are open to other options to the public option [for healthcare insurance reform]?

Rep. Julie Hamos: Yeah, I would be, sure.

Jeff Berkowitz: Even though… Speaker Pelosi said she couldn’t pass [healthcare reform] legislation in the House unless it had a public option?

State Rep. Julie Hamos [D-Evanston]: I am the kind of person who would look at the overall comprehensive package and I am not one of those people who says it is either this or that…
