Obama & McCain and 8th CD Cand. McSweeny on Cable and Streaming

Senator John McCain: I voted to make the tax cuts permanent, because it would have been a tax increase.

Jeff Berkowitz: Okay…and you’d be running on that position if you ran for President? That the Bush tax cuts were a good idea and you’d keep them?

Senator John McCain: If I run for President, I will come and talk to you first.

[laughter, big time, from the audience]

Jeff Berkowitz: One thing on the Presidency. As you know… former mayor Rudy Giuliani was out to campaign with David McSweeney as well-

Senator John McCain: Yeah, and he’s a wonderful man.

Jeff Berkowitz: And, he said the same thing about you.

[laughter from audience]

Jeff Berkowitz: Senator, on immigration, one compromise that I think has been suggested, between the House and the Senate bills, would be to have [more] border control for a year, have that legislation pass, but built into that legislation would be contemplated a more comprehensive—a more comprehensive bill that would include guest worker and path to citizenship [legislation]. Is that something that you would sign on to?

Senator John McCain [R-AZ]: That’s the outline of something that’s entirely possible because, if tomorrow, you said we’re going to seal the border, and we’re going to do whatever is necessary—we are spending billions more now, we are hiring thousands and thousands of new border patrol. We’ve got the National Guard on the border. We’re doing lots and lots of things. Even if tomorrow we said we’re going to set up a guest worker program…it would still take a couple of years. So you could be sealing the border, and at the same time moving forward with all of the apparatus and bureaucracy associated with a program like that. But, on the other hand, if you say you’ve got to seal the borders—my friend, the Israelis just found out you can’t seal a border. It’s going to require—the only thing that is going to keep Israelis safe from having people cross their borders is to stop the threat. The only thing that’s going to stop people from coming across our borders is to dry up the magnet, which is what attracts people, which is jobs. And that’s why—if the only way you get in, you can work in America would be with a temporary worker visa, tamper proof visa, those people who are south of the border would not want to come across illegally because there would be no job for them while they’re here, because any employer who employed them without that document would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. So it’s certainly negotiable in my view.

Jeff Berkowitz: One thing on the Presidency. As you know… former mayor Rudy Giuliani was out to campaign with Dave McSweeney as well-

Senator John McCain: Yeah, and he’s a wonderful man.

Jeff Berkowitz: And, he said the same thing about you.

[laughter from audience]

Senator John McCain: Rudy Giuliani is a true American hero. He truly is.

Jeff Berkowitz: Well then, how do you assess a race if its the two of you running against each other for the Republican nomination for President.

Senator John McCain: Well, I haven’t decided to run yet, so I hadn’t--

Jeff Berkowitz: But, if you did.

[laughter from audience]

Senator John McCain: All I know is that Rudy Giuliani is a great American hero and I respect him and admire him enormously. And, if there was a race between the two of us I know it would be very respectful and one that people would be proud of. But, neither he nor I have decided—made the decision, so I think it’s pretty much of an academic question at this time.

Jeff Berkowitz: When will you make that decision?

Senator John McCain: Early next year. I’m focusing my attention on the 2006 campaign.
***********************************************
Dave McSweeney: One more question.

Jeff Berkowitz: Can I ask one on tax cuts, because that’s one where the two of you differ, I believe. You have not been a fan of the Bush tax cuts. David McSweeney, of course, has [supported them strongly]-

Senator John McCain: I voted to make the tax cuts permanent, because it would have been a tax increase.

Jeff Berkowitz: Okay…and you’d be running on that position if you ran for President? That the Bush tax cuts were a good idea and you’d keep them.

Senator John McCain: If I run for President, I will come and talk to you first.
